MANILART TALK 101
This is actually the same outfit as here, I just added my trusty old trench coz I was already pressed for time (I came from merienda and Zentea with my mom in the afternoon, hihi). I attended the ManilArt Art Talk 101 at Secret Fresh, Ronac Art Center. Was really excited for this one coz remember my goal to visit galleries and museums more often? I haven't really been diligent on that goal. =S
We were invited to learn more about the upcoming ManilArt'11 which is the 3rd Philippine International Art Fair happening on Aug 25-27 at the NBC. We also got first hand experience of how masterpieces are created through Art 101. ;)
the evening's host
ManilArt 2011 Project Director Delan Robillos during the opening remarks. Later that evening, he told us about his OMG story - when he was still a boy, he used to go to the Metropolitan Museum everyday to view a certain painting. Turns out, the painter saw him everyday that she actually gave him the painting. Cool, right?!
the speaker of the evening was Robert Bjorn Santos, art director of the Fatima University gallery. He talked about collecting art and he was kind enough to bring some pieces from his collection. He shared a lot of insightful tips for those who wanna start collecting. The best tip I think is that you have to find a piece that you really want and that you think would make you smile just by looking at it everyday. He said that the worst mistake is to think of a piece primarily as an investment. It should come at a distant second at the most. ;)
He gave short anecdotes on the pieces he brought and my favorite were on these 3 pieces. The first one (I'm so bad with names, nakakahiya!) is a watercolor work by a Pampangueno artist. Since painting with watercolor has a certain science to it, the artist makes use of hairdryer to get the right color. The middle sculpture is by an artist whose works depict Filipino values. This specific one is called "Pagmamano". Art with heart, coolness. And the last one is an oil on canvas. He commented that people usually say bakit ang mahal mahal nyan eh kaya ko din naman yan gawin but he was quick to point out that it's not a question of you being able to do it, but more on you not being creative enough of thinking about doing something like it. Point well taken!
the last one is a handmade relikaryo. I can just imagine the attention to detail the artist has put in creating this miniature piece! take note, it's back to back too!
